MARLOTH PARK

On the doorstep of the Kruger National Park

Marloth Park is a 3,000-hectare private wildlife conservancy on the southern border of the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Unlike a game reserve, Marloth Park is a residential conservancy — people live here, and so do the animals.

The conservancy is unfenced, meaning animals move freely between Marloth Park and the Kruger National Park. Giraffe, zebra, nyala, warthog, kudu and bushbuck are daily visitors. Elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo are occasional guests.

Iconic Bushveld Wildlife Around Marloth Park

Bordered by the Crocodile River, Marloth Park operates as an unfenced wildlife corridor where plains game stroll past cottages and apex predators patrol the river perimeter at sunset.

African Lion

Leopard

Spotted Hyena

Prides regularly patrol the Crocodile River sandy beds at dusk. Their territorial roars vibrate across Marloth Park at night, audible from residential verandas up to five miles away.

Masters of stealth who scale tall jackalberry trees during the midday heat. They are known to hoist carcasses into high forks to keep them away from scavengers.

Remarkably intelligent pack hunters whose eerie whooping calls mark the switch from twilight to night. Their bone-crushing jaws make them the most efficient recyclers in the ecosystem.

Greater Kudu

Giraffe

Hippopotamus in the River

Renowned for their corkscrew horns reaching up to six feet long. In Marloth Park, these gentle giants move placidly between private properties, browsing sweet acacia leaves.

Towering up to six meters high, they roam the quiet residential roads with slow grace. Their 45-centimeter prehensile blue-black tongues strip leaves cleanly around vicious thorns.

Basking in pods along the shallows of the Crocodile River by day to protect their skin from the sun. At nightfall, they emerge onto riverbanks to graze up to 40 kilograms of grass.

Most Popular Birds in Marloth Park

Over three hundred bird species populate the canopy between the riverine forest and open bushveld, bringing lively color and distinctive calls to every morning bush stroll.

Lilac-breasted Roller

African Fish Eagle

Yellow-billed Hornbill

The crown jewel of the savanna with eight vivid shades across its feathers. Known for dramatic airborne courtship loops and dives, it frequently hunts insects from exposed roadside perches.

Often termed the sound of Africa. Its ringing, haunting yelp carries across the Crocodile River border as it sweeps down with hooked talons to pluck catfish from shallow rapids.

Affectionately nicknamed the flying banana. Inquisitive and sociable, these characters hop right onto garden tables and braai areas, foraging seeds, fruit, and small scorpions.

Bushveld stillness

The veranda holds morning light without sound, leaving the lowveld canopy as the only active element on the property.
